Tradition

Like Sylvia Plath, medical

students were attracted to me and

a few of them like to make beds,

as in building platform beds, with

lights on each corner, blinking like

a disco floor and with comfortable

space around the mattress for

books and coffee cups. I asked

around about this tradition of

handmade beds by young men as

soon or before they left home, but

no one else has heard of it.

Brenda Coultas' latest book The Writing of an Hour, an ars poetica, was published by Wesleyan University Press this spring.
