Before You Arrive
How porous the barrier between equity and debt,
at the risk of repeating itself the scroll unrolls
before you, showing the way people hold wealth
like a small frightened dog at the vet, clutched close
to the heart, or deciding who gets called to the islands
people don’t go to the Maldives to smoke, believe it or
not, they go because this may be our last sunset of the year
if it’s raining tomorrow, now the overseer can’t quit
asking us: where do you think all those rocks come from?
They blew up a mountain planting tomatoes on Mars, for you
for the nature of the adversary has gotten so good it can scrape
the beets out from under your fingernails. Beware the elongated
fruit syndrome, I don’t want to be gendered by thank yous with no
safety net, peddling a stationary bike in the dimmest room possible
so I gave it til next week’s public humiliation repast, got jumped, then
very politely, inquired if there’d be seconds, it was a subprime trio of
borrowers, we are the people from those places where everybody goes
to get caught sleeping with their eugenicist, yet here we are now, in this
magnetic field, all quiet by the bus stop, rear facing the most vulnerable
part of an economy, most ducks don’t quack so much in the winter, on
standby you stood to watch them as from an old tower, the woman at
the museum says, watch what you feed your brain to same field, same
field.
